Travelling in Budapest
Budapest Public transport in General |
The public transport system is quite easy to use in Budapest. You can buy your tickets in ticket vending machines (purple ones) which have English and many other European languages as well.
You can find all details about the ticket vending machines here. You can set the page for English in the top right corner. There is even a tutorial video on how to use it. To get invoices, you will need a customer card with a QR code what you can find here. All instructions on how to use it is written on the document. Print one, cut out the card and you are ready to get your invoices with Budapest public transport tickets! NOTE: we cannot accept any tickets with out invoices. We need both the ticket and the invoice to reimburse your expenses. What type of ticket will you need? Find the most fitting one for your travel here. |
Arriving to Budapest by plane |
Most of you arrive to Budapest by plane, and it means that by default you will arrive to Liszt Ferenc International Airport.
Depending on whether you take a bus or a train to Pécs, you'll need to go to different places. However, the transportation system is quite centralized, so most probably you will go through the city center. At this time of the year the best is if you take the airport bus (100E) from the airport, which takes you directly to the city center (to Deák Ferenc Square). You will need a special ticket for this bus, it costs 900 HUF. Your other option is to take bus 200E which takes you to the blue metro line, and you can continue your travel with metro towards the center. However, they are renovating that metro line, so it might be you'll need to take replacement buses. By taking bus 200E and the metro to the city center, you can save maximum 370 HUF but it will be more hustle. Check out the airport's description on all the options! |
Arriving With BUs or Train |
If you arrive to Budapest via bus, you most probably arrive to either Budapest-Népliget bus station or to Kelenföld train and bus station.
If you arrive to Budapest via train, you most probably arrive to Keleti train station. Lucky you, these stations are on metro lines, so it is really easy to move from one to another. All metro lines meet at the city center. |
Getting around

Here you have the metro network of Budapest.
To go to Pécs, your train goes either from Déli train station or Kelenföld train station. If you take the bus, it goes from Népliget bus station.
Déli train station is the last stop of Metro Line 2 (red line).
Kelenföld train station is the last stop of Metro Line 4 (green line).
Népliget bus station is on Metro Line 3 (blue line).
You can find this map online, it is everywhere in the city and you can get free maps at the airport.
I suggest you to use Google Maps!
Google Maps has Budapest's whole public transport system with the timetables of every bus, metro, train, tram, etc, which is available in the city. I also use Google Maps when I commute in the city, so it is tested!
It can be that there are replacement buses going on the line what you want to use. In this case, just follow the signs. Metro Line 3 is currently being renovated.
